The Saints Plays — Book Three

Miraculum is a dramatic retelling of the beloved Coptic legend of Saint Simon the Tanner and the miraculous moving of Mount Mokattam.

The action is set in Cairo in 979 A.D. when Caliph al-Muizz, goaded by a Jewish advisor citing Jesus’s words about faith moving mountains, issues an impossible challenge: move Mount Mokattam in three days or every Christian will be exiled or killed.

Bishop Abraham, trembling with fear and certain of catastrophe, receives a mystical vision directing him to seek help from an unlikely source: Simon, a scorned one-eyed tanner who lives among the refuse. This holy fool emerges as Abraham’s spiritual guide, coaching the anxious bishop through the crisis and teaching him that mountains are moved not by ecclesiastical authority but by humility and childlike faith.

As the deadline approaches, the tension builds through dramatic confrontations between faith and power, humility and pride, the foolishness of God and the wisdom of the world. On the third dawn, as the court gathers on the palace balcony overlooking Mount Mokattam, the impossible becomes gloriously real — demonstrating that faith can indeed move mountains when pride gives way to trust and divine mercy.
